lactate

  • Name: lactate
  • Description: An unspecified stereoisomer of lactate. A hydroxy monocarboxylic acid anion that is the conjugate base of rac-lactic acid, arising from deprotonation of the carboxyl group. It has a role as a human... metabolite and an Escherichia coli metabolite. It derives from a propionate. Lactate, or 2-hydroxypropanoate, was discovered in 1780 by a Swedish chemist, Scheele, who isolated it from sour milk. It is the simplest hydroxycarboxylate and exists as 2 stereoisomers. Lactate has a pKa of 3.86 and dissociates freely at physiological pH, yielding a lactate ion:lactic acid ratio of 3000:1. (CHEBI:24996)
